He's very artistic and imaginative. Kaede likes to think of different ideas on his own. His mind is always keeping him occupied, so he's never bored. He can stare at anything and make up a story about them just like that. However, he rarely ever speaks openly about them, or any other thoughts he has. Kaede has difficulty expressing his thoughts with his voice. He would prefer if people come to him to talk, rather than going up to other people. He's not one to start a conversation, but that's okay, considering he's easily approachable. Once you start a conversation, he will often jump from topic to topic. Normally, he's quiet and reserved, but if you interest him enough, he can talk for ages.

Gentle and kind, he doesn't get angry often, nor does he like to get angry (but depending on his mood it's surprisingly easy to get him angry). He also hates complaining and tries to not make people think badly of him.

Kaede, despite often saying that he likes to think he's 17, the age he died, he will often sound and act older.

For as long as Kaede had lived he had been treated as a gaijin, or foreigner: an outcast. His big, blue eyes, long eyelashes, and curly hair didn't help him to fit into the community. His father was a European who died of an illness. His mother had had an affair with him, despite already being engaged, so when she had gotten pregnant with his baby, her family was mad and very ashamed. They disowned her, and she was left to fend for herself. After finding a flyer for the town of Sugioka, she decided to take her child and escape to this place. It was a new life, and it seemed like a wonderful place to raise her newborn baby.

17 years later, in the town of Sugioka, Kaede and his mother lived together with Kaede working to help his mother with any living expenses. His mother taught him basic education because they couldn't afford to send him to a real school. Kaede's mom would often apologize to him about this, but he would just smile and say, "Don't worry about it mum. I'm fine, and I doubt I would have a lot of friends anyways."

He truly was fine with the way things were. Of course, he hated the attention that his eyes got him, but he learned to cope with it. He was just glad that it didn't scare away any customers. Kaede had learned how to make jewelry and the handles of swords by secretly observing the other metalwork artists in the town. He was very good at it, and everything he made looked very beautiful. They were incredibly detailed and each piece that he made was unique. The good quality of each item he made brought in a fair amount of money, which was thankfully enough to survive on.

November 30th, 1950 was a normal day like any other. Kaede had woken up bright and early to the sounds of birds just outside his window. He smiled and stretched, flaring his nostrils, allowing the smell of delicious breakfast flow through his senses. Slowly, he rose from his futon before walking over to the dining room. He took in the familiar form of his mother, who was setting the table, and sleepily greeted her a "Good Morning," which was returned quite cheerfully. It seemed that today, his mother would relax and stay at home. Kaede agreed to this eagerly, saying that she deserved a break.

Then, as usual, Kaede cleared the table and washed the dishes, talking to his mother about what he'd probably do during the day. After that, according to routine, Kaede took his bento and waved good-bye to his mother before walking down the path to his job. The tassels of his flower-shaped earring dangled as he walked along, and his beautiful red kimono brightly contrasted against the earthy scenery.

Work was normal too. Very normal. He took a few commissions, sold a few pieces to males looking for gifts for their fiances, and ignored a few stares at his eyes and hair. Kaede wasn't sure why they still liked to look at him; it had been seventeen years after all.

The day was over before he knew it, and the male wondered when the days started to pass by so quickly. He shrugged to himself and rubbed his arms. It was getting cold. Quickly, he walked back home, eager to sit in front of the fire. He vaguely noticed his visible breath as he wondered what his mother might be cooking. Chicken Katsu? Kitsune Udon? Teriyaki? Tempura? Well, whatever she cooked, Kaede just knew it would be delicious!

He entered the house happily, closing it behind him as soon as possible so he wouldn't let too much cold air in. Slipping off his shoes, he said, "Tadaima!" to let his mother know he was home. Suddenly, his vision blurred, and everything turned black. He couldn't tell or hear if his mother replied or not, and once he came to, he was in the shrine.

Transparent and as dead as a ghost, trapped in Sugioka for eternity.
